After much deliberation and debate, New York City decided to pass a new law last summer. As we wrote in a post last July, this law prohibits unlicensed short-term vacation rentals for fewer than 30 days in New York City. In other words, it will be illegal for homeowners and renters to rent or sublet an entire home for fewer than 30 days.

This law will take effect in May 2011.

Local Bigwig specializes exclusively in extended stay furnished home rentals where the average inquiry is for a 2 1/2 month stay (range is 1 to 9 months). This law does not affect us much but nonetheless, members in the Local Bigwig community should be aware of the new regulations in the temporary accommodations industry. In the very rare case that we receive an inquiry for fewer than 30 days, we will remind our members about this bill.

When and where will the government over-reaching end? Will it?

When homeowners’ rights are no longer valued by lawmakers, the whole community should be alarmed. Politicians are taking these kinds of “baby steps” every day to drag us all further away from what once made our country so great: Capitalism. (Oh! Is that a dirty word, now?)

Hi, I am writting from Spain. I am going to NY in September and I was just about to rent a house for 12 days because a hotel is much expensive, and now I have found this article about this new law. I don´t know If I understood it ok, there is no way to rent a house for a tourist for 2 weeks? Thank you!
