Who are the accommodation providers on LocalBigwig.com, you ask?
Local Bigwig addresses the extended stay housing market (>30 days) and has built a booking platform of various accommodation options for this need.
The basic criteria that all hosts on our platform must meet are that their units (1) are fully furnished, (2) have a kitchenette/kitchen, (3) be professionally managed, and most importantly, (4) offer a discounted monthly rate, as opposed to just multiplying the daily rate by 30.
Having aggregated accommodation options on our platform, we can say that generally, there are just 2 different types for >30 day stays – extended stay hotels and furnished monthly rentals. Both types work well for those who need it for work or for a life event (ie renovations, in-between buying/selling a home, and so on) so let us further explain the difference between these 2 types:
EXTENDED STAY HOTEL
Extended stay hotels are fully furnished units that offer services and amenities similar to those of traditional hotels (<30 day stays). These units are in tall buildings (like hotels) and are mainly studios and one-bedroom apartments and exude a homey vibe as they have a kitchenette/kitchen and many have a separate area as the ‘living room’. Most of these extended stay hotels are in the larger metropolitan destinations such as New York City and San Francisco. The monthly rates can range from budget prices to ultra-luxurious rates (some can even be $20,000/month!). All of these units are always fully furnished and typically include most of the following:
- Fitted kitchen or kitchenette
- Lounge/living room
- Dining area
- Work area with a desk and office chair
- Housewares, towels, linen
- High-speed internet access and a direct telephone line
- Cable TV
- Private bathroom
- A reception desk
- Concierge
- Shared laundry facility (typically in the basement)
- Bi-weekly housekeeping (or more frequently such as every week)
- Personal mailbox located behind the front desk

FURNISHED MONTHLY RENTAL
Furnished monthly rentals are residential apartments geared for stays of 30 days or longer. This type of furnished rental is managed by a professional company and can be a single-family detached home (if in a suburban area), a single unit in an apartment complex, or a condo/co-op unit in a high-rise apartment building.
These furnished monthly rentals typically include:
- Kitchen
- Dining Area
- Living Room
- Housewares, towels, linen
- High-speed internet access and a direct telephone line
- Cable TV
- Bi-weekly housekeeping (or more frequently such as every week)

EXTENDED STAY vs FURNISHED MONTHLY RENTAL
When deciding on the best option for your interim accommodation needs, here are a few particular things to consider:
- Support desired (such as a 24-hour front desk staff to assist you which are only available at extended stay hotels)
- Rates (extended stay hotels are typically more expensive)
- Parking needs (which can be free in the street in front of a furnished monthly rental)
- Amount of space (furnished monthly rentals are typically roomier)
